The 2008 Long and Long Draft
Jake Long and Chris Long went #1 and #2 on Saturday in New York City. There was
hardly any drama in this year's draft as Jake Long had already signed a $57
million contract earlier this week and rumors circulated before the draft that
Chris Long, Howie Long's son, was going 2nd to the Rams.
Best Trades of the Draft
1.
The Baltimore Ravens swapped their # 8 pick for Jacksonville's #26
pick, two 3rd rounders (picks #71 and #89) and a 4th rounder (#125).
Granted the Ravens didn't land Matt Ryan, but they still managed to draft a new franchise
quarterback in Joe Flacco from Delaware, plus get all those additional draft picks.
2. The Philadelphia Eagles got a 2nd round pick (#43), a 4th round pick (#109) and a 2009
1st round pick
from the Carolina Panthers so that Carolina could draft Jeff
Otah (OL) from Pittsburgh.
Team with the Best Round 1 and 2 Draft Picks
We didn't feel that any team stood out as having the best draft. However, the
Miami Dolphins did fill some key positions with the drafting of OL Jake Long,
DE Philip Merling and a
solid QB pick in Chad Henne. It shows that Parcells is trying to build his
new franchise from the inside out.
Team with the Worst 2008 Draft
The Tennessee Titans. Unless the Titans have a trade in the works for Roy
Williams or Chad Johnson, they passed on a lot of opportunities to draft a
playmaker at Wide Receiver which Vince Young badly needs. The Titans
waited until the 4th round to draft Lavelle Hawkins, a WR form California.
Surprising No Trade Made
For sure, I thought the Dallas Cowboys were going to make
a deal for Darren McFadden. After trading Fasano and Ayodele to the Dolphins for
a 4th round draft pick, I thought the Cowboys were going
to package some of their picks in an attempt to get Darren
McFadden from the Raiders. Jerry Jones may not have gotten Darren McFadden, but he did get
Arkansas running back Felix Jones in the end.
