Free Fantasy Football Defenses
Cheat Sheet
We have ranked the top defenses for the 2008 Fantasy Football draft.
There doesn't appear to be a very dominant defense in the 2008 fantasy draft.
Therefore, we do not advise spending a draft pick on a defense in the early
rounds. It is best to wait until the later rounds or select a defense that
will have a good matchup come playoff time in your league.
The Chargers and Vikings were two of the top defenses in scoring last season and
should continue to be this year as well. The Vikings were 8th in the NFL
in total sacks in 2007 and will only improve on that in 2008 with the addition
of Jared Allen who registered 15.5 sacks alone last year. The Chargers
defense got stronger as the 2007 season went on and as the team adjusted to the
new coaching staff.
Sleeper Pick: New Orleans Saints
Without a doubt the New Orleans Saints are the Sleeper Pick on Defense for 2008.
The Saints acquired Jonathan Vilma, Randall Gay, Bobby McCray, and Aaron Glenn
in the offseason. Those players should make a big impact on a defense that
finished near the bottom in defensive scoring in 2007.
Potential Bust: New England Patriots
The Patriot's defense is aging and have gotten even older with the signing
of John Lynch. The Patriots also lost some very good talent in their
secondary to free agency, namely Asante Samuel and Randall Gay. The
pressure to live up to the expectations of last season is going to be very
difficult for this team. All you have to do is just look at the recent the
history of how teams fared coming off a loss in the Super Bowl. Let's also
not forget the unfavorable schedule the NFL laid out for the Patriots (4
separate West Coast trips).
** San Diego Defense has been DOWNGRADED from #1 with the recent news of
Shawne Merriman's two torn knee ligaments. The Chargers draft ranking rests on
whether Merriman will play or have surgery.
** New York Giants Defense has been DOWNGRADED from #5 with the news of Osi
Umenyiora's season ending knee injury.
