A Bettor's Rant - Week 7 October 20th 2008 It's one thing to get a pick a game completely wrong like taking the Dallas
Cowboys to cover a 6.5 point spread and watch them lose by 20 points. You
can accept it and chalk it up to a bad pick. However, when a team scores a
meaningless touchdown at the end of a game to cover a spread, well that is just painful. There
were several games in week 7 that could be categorized as painful if your pick
was on the wrong team. In looking at consensus picks for these games, many
people were on the wrong side. These are the games we have a lot to to rant
about.
1. Seattle Seahawks (-10.5) at Tampa Bay Buccaneers
It's nothing like a meaningless last minute 4th and goal touchdown to find yourself on the
short end of this pick. Statistically, the Bucs probably should have won this
game 30-10, but instead you are
a loser by a 1/2 point.
2. Detroit Lions (+8.5) at Houston Texans
As I was flipping through the late games on
DIRECTV and
saw the Texans dominating the Lions by a score of 28-10, I thought I had this
one in the bag. Next thing you know, a 96 yard TD pass with a 2 point
conversion and a 54 yard FG had the Lions covering this game as well.
3. Cleveland Browns (+7) vs Washington Redskins
We are looking good in this game, the Redskins stopped the Browns on a goalline
stand and all that is left to do is run out the clock. Hold on! Did Clinton
Portis just put the ball on the ground? No worries, the Redskins defense can stop them
again on 4th and goal. Dope! another backdoor cover.
4. Oakland Raiders (+3) vs NY Jets
You've got to love this, the Raiders are lining up for a 57 yard FG.
After the miss, the Jets will get the ball back at their own 47 and they can
drive down and kick a game winning field goal for at least a push on this game.
Wait, did Janikowski just make that kick? The Jets didn't call a timeout to ice
him? You've got to be kidding me!
5. NY Giants (-10.5) vs San Francisco 49ers
We are back to the early games, so what if this story doesn't flow! All
the Pylon experts got this game correct but it did take a Giants safety late in
the game to cover this one. Finally, we find ourselves on the good end.
