NFL Bargain Bets for Week 1
September 10th 2009 - Old Man Winner
Dallas Cowboys (-6) at Tampa Bay Buccaneers
BYRON LEFTWICH ?????? Please!
That should be all I need to say, but since I love to hear myself write (huh?) I
will continue.
Byron Leftwich has a throwing motion that is worse than Charles Barkley's golf
swing! How is it that this guy got to the pros and continues to drop the ball
down to his waist with a funky double-clutch motion before bringing it back up
for the release point? The motion clearly takes additional time and thus in this
game of nanoseconds puts his club at an ever present disadvantage. All right . .
. all right, I'll get off Leftwich, but DeMarcus Ware probably won't.
If someone asked you which team would be in the news more during the offseason,
The Dallas Cowboys or the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, that would have been a
no-brainer, right? But, we would have all gotten that one wrong. Once T. O. was
released the circus folded its tents (no pun on the tragedy of Dallas' training
camp disaster) . . . and moved to eastern Florida. Since the end of last year,
Tampa has fired its head coach, hired a new 32-yr. old head coach with minimal
experience, hired a new Defensive Coordinator, released their starting
quarterback and arguably their best receiver, and recently fired their Offensive
Coordinator one week before the season. These guys are so lost they have been
rumored to be asking Al Davis for directions. On the other hand, Dallas has kept
their coaching staff and the core of their team in tact, their routines steady,
and their focus on the field crystallized without the TO distraction.
Two years ago the Cowboys started the season with five consecutive wins, last
year they started with three consecutive wins. And, they covered the spread in
six of those eight games. Wade Phillips and crew do a good job getting the team
ready for the start of the regular season and, with Tampa first up, this year
should be no exception.
From an X's and O's standpoint, Tampa is a running team (even though they cannot
make up their mind who will be their primary back - oy!) and Dallas should be
able to neutralize that for the most part. On the flip side, Dallas has a very
balanced attack and should be able to "take what the defense gives them". I'm
guessing that Tampa will be playing Santa Claus in this one.
Take Dallas, gladly give the 6, and start your season off right.
Other teams I like to cover this week: Cincy, GB, NE |
