NFL Underdog Pick for Week 15
December 13th 2013 - Special K
New York Jets (+11) at Carolina Panthers
This is the first time in over 5 years that the Jets have been an underdog this
large to a team not named the Patriots. The Jets were once a 14 point underdog
to the Cowboys back in 2007. The Jets are wedged in between two
Saints games for the Panthers. The Panthers finally came back down to reality
last week against the Saints and could get caught looking ahead to next week's
rematch. When I handicapped this game, I only had the Panthers favored by 7.5,
so to me, I see some value here and this is why I am picking the Jets.
Yes, I do understand the reasons why the spread is this large. Geno Smith has
definitely struggled on the road and the Panthers defense is tops in the
leagues. However, Geno Smith was able to bounce back last week in a game they
needed, granted it was against the
Raiders. One of the main reasons that Smith performed much better was because he has Jeremy Kerley back. Even with
all the games Kerley has missed, he is still the Jets leading receiver. Yes that
is a very sad statement but listen, the Panthers offense is not that explosive
either. Baring a barrage of Jets turnovers, the Jets should be able to keep this
game close and hang with the Panthers. The Jets defense matches up very well
with the Carolina offense. The Jets have been solid in stopping the
run all year. It is hard to pass up this many points with a team that is
still in the playoff hunt.
