Crouching Tiger, Hiding Dragon
You remember the movie . . . epic battles of two Martial Artists with
spectacular slow-motion fighting scenes. The fun of those scenes was the that
the combatants were fairly evenly matched and the fights seemed to go on
forever. I wish I could say the same for these two teams. Unfortunately for the
Chiefs, they are not a hidden dragon, but a hiding dragon with no punch, other
than the occasional Jamal Charles breakaway. That will not happen in this game.
The Bengals have not given up a rushing touchdown yet this year and average
giving up less than 77 yds rushing per game. Although Charles will undoubtedly
get his, he will certainly not run rampant against the stout front of the
Bengals. On the flip side, Andy Dalton has passed for 8 TD's with only 1
interception thus far this year and the Chiefs are a sieve, giving up over 300
yds passing per game and the most passing touchdowns (10) of any team in the
league.
All that said, maybe the most important reason I love Cincy in this one is based
on the schedule. The Chiefs played a physical game on the road in Green Bay last
Monday night and have to turn around and play another road game against another
very physical team. They also played their first game on the road, making this
one three of four on the road on a short week.
And, there is one last thing that I always feel compelled to say whenever
ranting on the Chiefs, "they will never be a great team unless they can throw
the ball down the field." Because Alex Smith fears the turnover more than he
values the potential for big plays, and more importantly, loosening up the
defense, defenses can scheme accordingly and thus have a leg up.
I expect this one to be fairly close in the first half before the Chiefs wither
and the Bengals pull away in the second half. Expect a big game from AJ Green
also.
