NFL Best Bets for Week 2
September 15th 2017 - Old Man Winner
LA Chargers -4.5 vs. Miami
If I asked you to name two quarterbacks who perennially are among the league
leaders in interceptions you might quickly think of both Phillip Rivers and Jay
Cutler. Neither is very keen on protecting the ball. That said, I think when
their interceptions are thrown does matter. Without any proof, I have a strong
recollection that Cutler's are thrown almost any time during the game, often in
critical situations. On the other hand, many of Rivers interceptions are thrown
at the end of games when throwing into coverage is required if you want to give
your team any chance of winning.
I have always given Rivers credit for this. He is not afraid to hurt his
personal stats to try and win a game. He is a fierce competitor who never gives
up, unlike Cutler (or Eli Manning - did you see Sunday night's game where he
continued to throw nothing but 5 yards down the field, literally until the end
of the game, even though his team was down more than one score - completely
ridiculous, but I digress. BUM! OK, I'm done now - Loser! Sorry.)
I think this game will come down to who throws the most interceptions, and I
think it will definitely be Cutler. Miami has been completely distracted and
worn out by the hurricane and they have to fly across the country and play an
angry team that should have won their game last week. The Chargers defense
looked good last week - better than the score would indicate, and their corners
are very solid. Rivers always plays better at the beginning of the year than at
the end. He has an improved offensive line, better receivers, and a running back
that is quickly becoming elite.
I expect at least one defensive score from the Chargers this week, along with a
strong game from Rivers.
