This is the only trend you need to know when picking sides
for a Super Bowl. Since the very first Super Bowl, when a favored team wins,
they cover the spread over 80% of the time. There have only been 5 Super
Bowls where a favored team failed to cover the spread when they won.
That's a pretty strong trend, however it has been a strange football season.
Do you know anyone that actually predicted the Arizona Cardinals would make it
to this year's
Super Bowl when the season started?
Both coaches, Ken Wisenhunt and Mike Tomlin are only in their second season as
an NFL head coach. However, neither one of them are strangers to the Super
Bowl. Ken Wisenhunt was Cowher's offensive coordinator for 3 years and won
Super Bowl XL. Mike Tomlin was the defensive backs coach when the Tampa
Bay Buccaneers won Super Bowl XXXVII. This a homecoming of sorts for the
current Steelers coach. Mike Tomlin was actually chosen over Wisenhunt for
the Steelers vacancy following Bill Cowher's retirement, so Wisenhunt has some
extra motivation to prove that the Steelers made the wrong decision.
Ironically, both teams mirror their head coaches, the Cardinals with the potent
offense and the Steelers with the best defense in the NFL.
One of the keys to this game will be the Cardinals offensive line's ability to
keep Kurt Warner upright and give him time to distribute the ball to his wide
receiver playmakers Breaston, Boldin, and Fitzgerald. For the Steelers,
Big Ben has a lot of pressure to perform better than he did in Super Bowl XL, a
game in which he threw for only 123 yards and had two interceptions.
